As the world moves from its current level of carbon-dependence to a lower-carbon future, careful transition planning, investment and support is required to ensure no one is left behind.

Professor Jan Rotmans, world-leader in Transitions to Sustainability, presented to the Taranaki community on 3 August 2021, at ‘Taranaki Transition: our low-emissions future’, a Taranaki-specific event that is part of the Aotearoa Transition Launchpad Series.

A “just transition” for Taranaki is a partnership approach between government, unions, Iwi, community groups, education and business to make sure the people, businesses, communities, and regions who may be most affected by a transition are given opportunities.

In Taranaki’s case, this means our whānau, communities and businesses are moving together with a plan that enables the sustainable and resilient growth for our entire region. This Roadmap focusses on looking out for all our people both today and into the future with an emphasis on collaboration and partnership.

The Taranaki 2050 Roadmap aims for a just transition that includes all the different communities and sectors that make up our region. The Roadmap looks to build on our strengths, such as energy and engineering, food and agriculture, and look for new areas where Taranaki has the potential to lead New Zealand.

It’s being supported by the New Zealand Government through the Just Transitions Unit within the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
