Welcome to Taranaki
One of the world’s biggest sporting events is coming to the world’s best small city in 2011 when three Rugby World Cup 2011 matches are contested at New Plymouth’s Stadium Taranaki.
Match 1: Ireland v. Americas 2, Sunday 11 September 2011
Match 2: Europe 2 v. Americas 2, Thursday 15 September 2011
Match 3: Wales v. Africa 1, Monday 26 September 2011
A Rugby World Cup 2011 Festival will ensure that visiting teams, administrators, fans and supporters see the best of Taranaki’s legendary hospitality and discover just why this region has been called the ‘Events Capital of New Zealand’.
National and international awards have proven Taranaki is a vibrant and innovative region. This is further reflected in the hosting of these three Rugby World Cup 2011 matches.
The challenge is now on the Taranaki people to ensure Rugby World Cup 2011 in Taranaki is an event ‘truly like no other’.
Tickets for each match are likely to go on sale in late 2009.
About Stadium Taranaki
Yarrows Stadium/Stadium Taranaki, in central New Plymouth, has been rated one one of the world's best rugby grounds.
The May 2009 issue of New Zealand Rugby World magazine found the stadium the third best ground, beating out big names such as Newlands and Twickenham in the process, and coming behind Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium (second place) and Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium (first). No other New Zealand rugby stadium made the list.
In tapping Yarrow Stadium for third spot, NZRW has focused on its “distinctly Kiwi” atmosphere, being a regional stadium and the spiritual home of rugby, with the iconic shape of Mount Taranaki visible in the background.
“Then there is the ground itself. It is tight,” says the magazine,“The two stands are close to the pitch and you feel you are almost on top of the action. The players know you are there and it is shared, intense experience. It helps immeasurably that the locals have a great knowledge of the game and are vocal in their support.”
Editor Gregor Paul says in compiling the list he considered the entire package of the rugby experience: The town or city the stadium is in, ease of transport to the stadium, the facilities and the atmosphere.
