The Arthouse Cinema is a non-profit association made by local people for the community. Located in the premises of the old Mayfair cinema in New Plymouth, this boutique cinema aims to provide movies that cater to niche markets and the high culture element.
Once up the stairs, you will discover an environment that is founded on the social aspects of cinema, combining a convivial atmosphere with quality film, food and beverages. When the Mayfair was opened in 1915, Garnett Saunders proclaimed it “Everybody’s Theatre”. This claim still stands strongly today with a variety of screenings such as: This Way of Life, the Tihi Maori New Year Short Film Festival, Live Opera from the MET in New York, Live Theatre from the London National Theatre and the very first Surf Film Festival in New Zealand.
Arthouse Cinema is a fantastic venue and the trustees are excited to be able to share the Arthouse experience with you. Whether you are a social club looking to watch a movie, a business wanting to reward your staff or just simply you, wanting a very special place for a very special event, we will be more than happy to dedicate our 75 seats fully licensed bar to you.
We hope that you have an enjoyable experience and return to visit on a regular basis! Your support directly contributes to keeping Arthouse open and bringing more diverse and high quality film to Taranaki.
