We welcome visitors to our native garden by prior arrangement. The Anderson Family has owned and developed this native garden since 1993. Our Swiss style lodge rests in 5 acres of original bush; it is designed to capture majestic views of Mt Egmont/Taranaki, bordering the National Park. The Garden includes all New Zealand natives, lakes, waterwheel and a bush walk. Our rainforest has many Rimu, Totara, Kahikatea, Lancewood and Miro trees. Flaxes are growing profusely and providing food and a playground for the many native birds, such as Tui, Bellbird, Woodpigeon and indeed the Wild kiwi. You will find many delicate ferns, mosses, lichens and some beautiful flowering tree and ground orchids. There is Mountain Five Finger, Leatherwood, Coprosmas, Hebes and the very special mountain cabbage tree. Take the bushwalk which will transform you immediately into another world. Everything in our garden is natural and native, except my vegetable garden and about 25 Rhododendrons. The Rhododendrons thrive in this environment, as it is close to the conditions where they originally come from. The cost to visit the garden is a $2 during the Festival and it is free the rest of the year. You also might be able to take away one of my potted native plants, as I usually replant what I have to clear out. It is indeed a photographer’s delight no matter what the season of the year. Just imagine the surroundings after a fresh fall of snow! Absolutely magic.
