In 2007 Venture Taranaki officially recognised the importance of taking action against climate change by updating its statement of intent to reflect sustainability as a key theme for the organisation.
Under this development theme the Trust has actively sought interventions to reduce its carbon footprint, and over the last 12 months has achieved a 30% reduction in petrol consumption, an 8% reduction in domestic air travel and a 54% drop in international air travel.
This achievement has been recognised through Landcare Rresearch's CarboNZero programme, which has again awarded Venture Taranaki CarboNZero accreditation.
One initiative Venture Taranaki has undertaken to help achieve this reduction is signing up to the new car sharing initiative Cityhop.
Cityhop is New Zealand's first car sharing company, and has a car available for short-term hire in New Plymouth. The concept works on two levels, but enabling businesses and individuals to share ownership, and by encouraging people to plan their journeys before leaving home, ideally questioning whether a car is necessary, or by grouping car trips into a single outing.
