There are funds available to help your business grow through investing in people for research and development (R&D) - whether you are a small start up or a large established exporter.
Capability funding enables both early stage and mature companies to plan successfully for R&D investments. Capability funding can be used to:
- Engage with technical and commercial experts
- Employ undergraduate, postgraduate, Masters and PhD students to work on technology and commercial R&D projects
Engaging with our future innovators is a fantastic opportunity for them to gain and develop technical skills working in a commercial research environment, whilst it gives you the added value of their expertise.
TechNZ Internships (Undergraduate)
Internships encourage innovative companies to employ senior undergraduate students enrolled in a science, technology or engineering degree to work on an R&D project. Places are available during the summer holidays (November to February). Baseline funding is $16 per hour + GST for up to 400 hours of work ($7,360).
TechNZ Internships (Postgraduate)
Postgraduate internships are aimed at giving New Zealand’s future innovators a head start in their careers by developing their technical skills in a commercial research environment. Funding is available for postgraduate science, technology and engineering students at a maximum of $30,000 per person towards a salary of up to six months.
TechNZ Fellowships (Masters and PhD)
Fellowship funding is for companies who want to involve postgraduate students in their R&D programmes. This will help you develop new knowledge that leads to commercialisation of a new product, process, or service, which will ultimately grow your revenue. You must have a defined project, with an identified student and University supervisor. Depending on the type of fellowship, stipend funding can be up to $25,000 per year.
TechNZ Expert
The expert scheme partially funds the costs for an expert to work on a technically challenging R&D project. The expert could either provide specialist technical expertise or can assist in commercialisation.
Capability Funding cannot be used for:
- Business as usual activities
- Patent filing costs
- Generic business planning activities
